Port of Gdansk  - Success stories for the year 2017

The Port of Gdansk rebuilds its position on the logistics map of the automotive sector. Automotive concerns (Huyndai and Nissan) have selected Port Gdansk for the distribution centre of their cars. Starting from January 2017 Hyundai’s cars, manufactured in the Czech factory in Nosovice, are transported by trucks and trains to Gdansk, from where they are transported further to the British port of Tilbury by sea. The estimated annual volume of cars exported from Gdansk will amount to about 50,000 cars per year. Beginning from 1st April 2017 another 3 year automotive contract will be launched also in Gdansk. Since that moment the transport of Nissan cars with the destination in Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia will be made via the Port of Gdansk. At the same time Port of Gdansk will become an automotive distribution hub of Nissan for the whole territory of Central-Eastern Europe.

The Port of Gdansk announces the year 2017 as the record breaking in cruise traffic. The present cruise season 2017 in the Port of Gdansk seems to be exceptional. The list of cruise ships registered for this season shows a 2-fold increase in the number of cruise calls in comparison to the year 2016. It is expected that in 2017 the Port of Gdansk will be visited by 67 cruise vessels which will be a record breaking result ever in the history of the port. According to the expectations of the Port of Gdansk Authority it may bring to Gdansk even 33 thousand of cruise tourists. Most of the vessels will call at Gdansk not for the first time. They used to visit port in the past however the most exceptional seems to be the decision of the ship-owner Viking Cruises who has decided to register for this season 22 calls at Gdansk. Very exceptional is also the decision of including Gdansk in very long and unique trips leading through such countries as: Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Monaco, Spain, Portugal, France, UK, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Poland (Gdansk), Estonia, Russia, Finland and Sweden. In the past Gdansk was visited almost exclusively by the cruise vessels travelling round the Baltic Sea. This year’s cruise season will also be the longest one ever. It will start on 21st April and end on 29th December 2017.

The Port of Gdansk with a new regular shipping connection with U.S.A. In 2017 a regular general cargo service connection with the United States operated by Spliethoff was launched from the Port of Gdansk. Ships set off from Gdansk to the USA at least once a month, calling at ports such as Antwerp, Baltimore, Jacksonville, New Orleans, and Houston. Optionally, on the way, they also visit various ports on the east coast of Mexico. The service handle conventional general cargo, but also investment deliveries and, optionally, container transport. The first call took place on 19 January 2017. This decision enriched the red of regular intercontinental shipping services from the Port of Gdansk. Now the vessels on regular basis call from Gdansk at U.S.A., China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ecuador.
