Mission/Objectives: 

FN'N, the Cluster of Nutrition and Health, was created in 2010 to contribute to the innovation within the Spanish food sector in the field of healthy and functional foods, and increase its competitiveness through shared strategies that generate knowledge and innovation flows.

FN'N promotes innovation activities in nutritional and health claims, development of ingredients, additives and functional foods, food safety, industrial processes and technologies, market analysis, legal regulations and specialized training.

FN'N, the Cluster of Nutrition and Health, works on 6 strategic lines:

  • Innovation in food products with nutritional and health claims
  • Development of ingredients, additives and functional foods

  • Innovation in industrial processes and technologies
  • Market analysis and legal and technology watch

Being members of FN'N Cluster, the partners enjoy the following benefits and services: 

  • They propose ideas and participate in cluster’s projects cluster (5-10 year) 
  • They orientate the cluster strategy, target markets, and the priority working lines, projects and new contacts 
  • They receive support on healthy and functional foods by the cluster manager for the detection of opportunities (to strengthen the know-what, know-how and know-who, under the 2014-17 strategic plan and annual business plan and projects) 
  • They have preferential access to infrastructures (COS, CTNS, URV IRTA, UVic-UCC…)

Success Story / Achievements: 

The Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI) has granted SMARTFOODS project. A project of an industrial nature which aims to design and develop smart foods and nutritional supplements, acting in reducing the risk of the most common chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and obesity. Led by Laboratorios Ordesa (FN'N CLUSTER MEMBER), the project has the participation of others companies like Alimentómica , Andrés Pintaluba (FN'N CLUSTER MEMBER), Angulas Aguinaga, Biopolis, Grupo Siro and Nutrafur, and supported in the technical coordination of the CTNS (FN'N CLUSTER MEMBER) besides the participation of other research organizations. The most important point and innovative SMARTFOODS, and wherein the CTNS have a great involvement rests with the aim of overcoming functional foods there today in our society, and make smart food combining several bioactive ingredients with different functionalities to act against a larger number of targets simultaneously and thus providing a more comprehensive multifactorial disease risks in addition to customize response to the needs of each stage of life and the nature of people.

The project budget is 11.6 million Euros for the next four years, and is within the framework of the call Programa Estratégico de Consorcios de Investigación Empresarial Nacional (CIEN).
