Success Story / Achievements:

International Development Plan: each year a complete strategic International Development Plan is conduct for the members, based on market analysis, market opportunities and internal studies among the members.

Objectives: the main goal is to work as a “French Mountain Team” on the targeted export markets. The Cluster Montagne focuses its strategy, actions and means on the preparation of major sporting events such as winter Olympic Games.

Impact: for instance, French companies realized around 300 million € of turnover with Sochi Olympic Games in 2014, partly thanks to the job run by the cluster during the 10 years before the event. The cluster’s members are now working for the coming Pekin 2022 Winter Olympic Games, with a strong strategy on the Chinese market. The major Chinese decision-makers will thus be welcomed by the cluster during the next Mountain Planet trade show in April in Grenoble. They will be honor guest of the show, among 150 others international decision-makers invited and managed by the cluster’s team during one week, with pre-arranged business meetings with companies. This kind of original action is the result of a strong cooperation between the cluster’s team, the members companies and the trade show organizers. True business results can be expected from such a long-term job.

In 2015, around 100 companies have been involved in the International Development Plan (for 265 participations).

Contribution to the achievement of the cluster’s strategic objectives: the Cluster Montagne pursue 4 strategic objectives, one among them is to gather and promote French expertises on international markets. Export is a true strategic concern for the French companies, even SME, in the mountain development sector.

Contribution to the sustainability of the cluster organization’s development: cluster’s international action is determining both for the members and the international partners who need to count on a reliable structure to help them to conduct their tourist development projects. International services for members are always charged. This is an important revenue source for the cluster.

Departmental strategy for sport and tourism: since 3 years, the Cluster Montagne succeeded in becoming a strong partner for French ministries involved in the development of sport and tourism business: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Finances.

Objectives: two main goals: first, to organize a structured tourism sector with the “French Travel” strategy towards foreign markets to sell the French excellence for infrastructure building, hosteling, events organization... Mountain tourism is one of the “export families” and missions have still been conducted together with the Cluster Montagne in Montenegro and Iran, both countries which have important tourist development projects. Secondly, to improve the French destination by developing new structured offers. Regarding mountain tourism, the target is summer tourism. One of our members has been in charge of a study about summer tourism for the Ministry.

Impact: very important to position the French know-how in mountain development project throughout the world with institutional visit card. The Cluster Montagne is now strongly involved into the French strategy and takes part, with some of its members, to presidential and departmental trips. Also important for our members, who are reassured and proud to be members of a recognized cluster.

Contribution to the achievement of the cluster’s strategic objectives: the Cluster Montagne pursue 4 strategic objectives, one among them is to gather and promote French know-how on international markets. There is also a lobbying action to make our members and their know-how better known by French and foreign decision makers.

Contribution to the sustainability of the cluster organization’s development: cluster’s international action is determining both for the members and the international partners who need to count on a reliable structure to help them to conduct their tourist development projects. Regarding public fundings, it is also very important for the cluster to be recognized by the policies as a reliable partner with a positive impact on its sector.
