Cluster Strategy

The E-Mobility Cluster Regensburg has set itself the goal to place the region Bavaria among the best locations for technological innovation in the field of E-Mobility as part of the regional business development program. Therefore the E-Mobility Cluster Regensburg initiates and designs research- and application projects in the sector of E-Mobility and is not only restricted to regional and national projects, but also investigates into international projects and collaborations. The E-Mobility Cluster Regensburg is focused on electric vehicles, smart grid/charging station infrastructure and ICT for e-mobility.

Access to public support

The E-Mobility Cluster helps their members with the fast and effective implementation of innovative project ideas. We suggest to first submit an idea sketch and prepare a non-binding, financial estimate. With help of the cluster members are able to draw up a meaningful idea sketch.

We also assist upon consulting the draft of the project outline and the accurate processing of administrative forms while filing the complete funding application. Due to long years of experience with funding programs, it became obvious where the emphasis in a funding proposal is to lay, which mistakes can be avoided from the start and which wordings are recommended in the application.

Furthermore we promote a scientific cooperation with regional universities among research and development projects to implement innovative results of research in concrete applications and products.

It requires a risky financing to implement a project idea into an innovation and conduct concrete research and development projects. For this, subsidies and third party funds are available.

Promotion of activities

A professional advertising presence, for example in social networks, is nowadays a requirement to be successful as a company. Through PR and additional cross-linking to closely related industries, a company gains attention in the google-ranking. The E-Mobility Cluster thereby supports the member companies and publishes press releases or current news through a variety of channels: Cluster-website and social media (facebook, twitter, google+). Furthermore, the news are included in the regular newsletter. If there are successful projects within working groups, they are spread to our press distribution list by press release. The cluster also supports companies with participation in joint stands at relevant trade fairs (e.g. eCarTec).

Success Story / Achievements:

R&D-project CityTrain

The company CityTrain GmbH from Regensburg has been manufacturing lorries in small batches since 2006 and distributes them throughout Europe. A weaving track is a tractor with trailers for passenger transport. As a rule, they are used in the tourist context, e.g. in inner cities. Modified passenger cars with combustion engines are used as train engines. On the part of potential customers, the company Citytrain was asked to supply the drive train of the tractor instead of a combustion engine with an electric drive.

In cooperation with the company CityTrain, the cluster has evaluated the extent to which it is possible to meet the demand for the drive power to be supplied by the electric motor, since the vehicle mass of approximately 12,000 kg requires a suitably dimensioned drive. The implementation of an electric motor in a vehicle, which was originally conceived and produced by the manufacturers as a combustor, requires additional components e.g. corresponding power electronics. The small-series production of the electrified electric railway system necessitates individualized solutions, e.g. for the battery management system (BMS). Here a BMS which is specifically tailored to the batteries of the E-Waybahn needs to be developed. In principle, a positive assessment of the feasibility was achieved. Other measures, e.g. the search for a suitable technology partner and funding screening was initiated and positively concluded.

R & D project development of a charging station with an integrated parking space management module in cooperation with the company Schmitz GmbH

The cluster company Schmitz GmbH (headquarters in Regensburg, 5 employees) has approached the cluster because it wants to integrate the existing optical sensor solution for parking space management in charging stations for electric vehicles. With the help of the cluster, the Technical University of Deggendorf was identified as a suitable partner for technology and development. The Technical University of Deggendorf, together with Schmitz GmbH, will develop a first prototype. The E-Mobility Cluster Regensburg has developed a charging station prototype for the R&D project ("Frala - framework for charging stations"), which was completed in August 2016, and funded the development. Due to the given conditions, a Bavarian innovation voucher was given as a recommendation.

Why should partners choose you for cooperation?:

The development and implementation of services for companies of the E-Mobility Cluster Regensburg is essential, because it supports companies with implementing innovative ideas into marketable products and services. These include for example support at innovation processes and further services in fields like funding acquisition, internationalization or apprenticeship and in-service training. The cluster offers services among the innovation value chain for their members.
