Mission/Objectives: 

EMC2 is a French competitiveness cluster created in 2005 in the framework of a national initiative for industry competitiveness, operating in the Pays de la Loire region on advanced manufacturing technologies.

The association gathers all the actors of innovation around key markets and technologies to foster the emergence of collaborative projects of R&D. The aim is to reinforce the innovation territorial ecosystem by structuring 4 sectors – aeronautics, naval, ground transportation and energy – in a common and transversal approach: the advanced manufacturing of the technologies. The vision cluster is to promote business development through collaborative innovation, building an innovation path mixing skills, markets and technologies to make innovation R&D projects emerge. EMC2 activities are enhanced by the IRT Jules Verne (Research and Technological Center) created two years ago at the initiative of the cluster.

EMC2 leads a network of 380 members composed of SMEs, major industrial groups such as Airbus, Lec Chantiers de l'Atlantique, Naval Group, EDF, … as well as research and training centres. At the end of 2019, the global budget of R&D reached 2.2 bn € for 300 projects launched, including 700M€ of public funds.

The heart of EMC2 activities is to facilitate and enhance the innovation of its ecosystem’s members, via collaborative R&D projects on topics encompassed in its strategic thematic scope.

Various activities are then deployed:

  • [idea factory] making project ideas emerge and organising networking activities among which technical workshops, academic meetings, major groups presentation of R&D strategies, business conventions (e.g. Composites Meetings), Task Force Europe and other networking events for the members of the ecosystem (more than 15 events per year).
  • [project factory] turning ideas into R&D collaboration projects: project managers assist the project leaders into elaboratating their projects and access to funding for R&D, from regional, national or European sources.

On top of these activities, EMC2 represents its members at various national and international events, such as the JEC Europe, Paris Le Bourget, EU Brokerage Event Advanced Manufacturing… and works on developping relationships with specific partners able to provide effective solutions to different needs of companies and their R&D strategies including Intelectual and Industrial Property, consortium agreement, writing project proposals, proposing bank facilities,…

Although EMC2 cluster has not yet collaborated in European projects, we strive to improve the excellence of our service and knowledge in order to best accompany our European partners. Whilst doing so, we had a profound cooperation with the Entreprise Europe Network in order to boost the internationalization for each of our SME, of which some are already in contact with their respective European partners. 

As a good example, EMC2 is working closely since 2015 with our UK partners, Innovate UK, the KTN and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult Center by organizing a European Brokerage Event for Advanced Manufacturing on June 2015, which gathered more than 150 participants from 14 different countries and involved 130 persons into more than 280 B2B meetings. This year will see the 2nd edition of this brokerage organized in Birmingham on the 15th of June 2016. 

Another initiative since 2011 to keep a close relation with European clusters is called the Inter-Cluster Brokerage Event (ICBE). A different cluster of this network agrees to host this meeting every year (EMC2, TWI, M2i, MAI Carbon,…)

Grade2XL – Functionally Graded Materials for Extra-Large Parts

Grade2XL is a joint development programme aligning partners along the value chain to foster the rapid development of WAAM materials and process. Grade2XL will deliver multi-material products of superior quality and performance. The high printing rate of WAAM, combined with the ability to control material properties down to the nanoscale, will enable building strong and durable engineering structures.

The Grade2XL project, funded by the Horizon 2020 programme, will demonstrate the potential of multi-material wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) for large structures ~1 to >10 m length. Grade2XL will strengthen Europe’s capacity to drive manufacturing innovation globally and withstand growing competition from Asia.

CLAMTEX main objective is to strengthen cluster management excellence of the participating European clusters to boost their specialized innovation eco-system by facilitating the cross-sectoral and cross-regional collaboration to facilitate the uptake of digitalization within and beyond the partnership with the implementation of ClusterXchange pilot scheme.

Success Story / Achievements: 

Research Technology Institute IRT Jules Verne is the implementation of our cluster role in improving policy and performance of our SME member’s insertion in global value chains and innovative transformation. The IRT Jules Verne is a mutualized research center dedicated to Advanced Manufacturing technologies, benefiting from French budget to invest on equipment and R&D projects decided upon industrial and academic members. The Gold Label took into account this project as one of the example of our success story, to become an innovative hub for regional development. 

Another success story lies within the initiation and organization by EMC2 of the Composites Meetings, offering specific business opportunities to our SMEs mainly with numerous potentials clients in the world such as Bombardier, Embraer, Boeing,…  On 2013, when the event took place in our home city, Nantes, we set up more than 4900 B2B meetings with a participation of 17 foreign countries.

The strategic field of activity of EMC2, advanced manufacturing technologies, applied to various transport and energy sectors, makes it quite unique and an interesting partner for different market-oriented or technology-oriented cluster, bridging the value chain.
