The Kongsberg cluster main strategy is to be the driving force for strengthening the competitiveness of the companies through faster innovation, smart use of new technology and a strong sharing culture.

The core expertise of the cluster is Systems Enginnering, which is an ideal framework for safe and effective implementation of new technologies into existing and new solutions throughout their entire product life cycle. We use the Systems Engineering framwork to get the overall view and analysis of the total life cycle mangement of product and processes across all business domain.

Smarter use of new technologies in products and production processes is the core of the cluster's DNA. 

Number of employees in the Kongsberg industry has grown from 3,800 to 24,000 worldwide and the revenue from 2.5 BNOK to 45 BNOK in the period 1987 until 2016. All of the large companies supply advanced system solutions used for demanding applications where the consequence of failure is dramatic. Such requirements need holistic, strong and efficient innovation processes, which is the basic of Systems Engineering. The systems are developed in close cooperation with demanding customers and relevant competence institutions.

In most areas, the companies have a world leading market position and global operations. In Kongsberg the companies have 8,000 employees, while the remaining 16,000 employees are spread on more than 200 locations in more than 40 countries. In Norway, the companies have own operations in 18 of the 19 counties and employees or sub-suppliers in over 90 % of all Norwegian municipalities. The cluster is of national importance.

The Kongsberg cluster has decades of tradition for cooperation and innovation within existing companies and in areas of high national importance. This unique innovation power has yearly, in average, created 800 new jobs and over 1.5 BNOK increase of revenue. Based on the strong competence base and the collaborative culture, the companies have seen new opportunities, seized them and successfully developed new business areas.
