Mission/Objectives: 

MEDIS DIH Scarl, the Apulian Mechatronics Technological Cluster and Digital Innovation Hub, was established in October 25th, 2007 and it is a non-profit organization, recognised by the Apulia Region government, grouping Public Research Organization, Companies and Private Research Centres members. It is owned by public and private shareholders, with a share capital of 51% held by public shareholders for a requirement of the Social Statute. MEDIS public partners are: Politecnico of Bari, University of Bari “Aldo Moro”, University of Salento, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche. MEDIS private partners are: Centro Ricerche Fiat ScpA; Centro Studi Componenti per Veicoli (BOSCH) SpA; Confindustria Bari e BAT; FPT Industrial SpA; GETRAG SpA; ITEL Telecomunicazioni Srl; Magneti Marelli SpA; MASMEC SpA; MERMEC SpA.

 

MEDIS DIH brings together the skills of the regional leading public research institutions and the industrial experience of the leading business entities, able to carry on the industrial research topics in the Mechatronics field on the regional territory. This in order to create within this Cluster a container of experiences of excellence in the development of enabling mechatronics technologies, which can be available and exploitable to increase the competitiveness of the Apulian enterprises, particularly SMEs.Thanks to the scientific excellence guaranteed by the presence of Regional Universities and national research centres, MEDIS DIH proposes and implements initiatives and projects aimed at: (a) attracting investment in high-tech sectors; (b) contributing to the development of technical and scientific skills of the industrial partner; (c) strengthening the research system of the Apulia Region both at national and international level.

The objectives of MEDIS DIH actions (Article 4 of the Social Statute) refer to Mechatronics, Digital Technologies and ICT in:

a) Study, research, development and result transfers

b) Support for the planning, organization and carrying out of industrial research and pre-competitive

d) Technology transfer, innovation and training programs and services

It aims at promoting and developing Innovation and Technology Transfer focusing on key enabling technologies of transversal strategic importance for a relevant number of industrial sectors (production/diagnostic systems according to the paradigms of "Industry 4.0"/"Intelligent Factory", aerospace and automotive applications, security systems, etc.). Being member of the coordinating and management committee of National Intelligent Factories Cluster (CFI), one of the Italian National Technological Cluster, MEDIS DIH also operates for strengthening on the national territory a technological network on advanced manufacturing oriented to Industry 4.0 paradigms.

MEDIS DIH was also actively involved in the implementation of the feasibility study for the establishment of a I4MS Regional Digital Manufacturing Innovation (RDMI) Hub, named Apulia Manufacturing RDMI Hub, whose aim is to contribute to the development on the Apulia Region territory of specific I4MS Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for: 1) CPS/IoT Data Generation and Logging; 2) Big data analysis; 3) Integration of IoT data towards final users; 4) CPS/IoT assisted Facilities and Process Technologies for autonomous self-managing of Manufacturing Processes.The Apulia Manufacturing RDMI Hub will work to establish an innovation ecosystem for realising two main objectives: facilitating the Apulian Manufacturing SMEs access to advanced IoT business management systems, improving their operational effectiveness and enhancing their business efficiency; raising-up the awareness of SMEs respect to strategic CPS/IoT Technologies, enabling them to increase the added value of their products/process and boost their competitiveness on global markets.

The output of this feasibility study was the integration of the Digital Innovation Hub activities in the previous ones and the official establishment of MEDIS DIH as Apulian Mechatronics Technological Cluster and Digital Innovation Hub.

According to Regional Government of Apulia Region strategies and with its acknowledgment, in 2011-2016 MEDIS DIH have fully managing the following important projects co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Education University and Research (MIUR) (about 80 M€) under PON R&C 2007-2013 programmes:

1. "EURO 6: Advanced electronic control unit, fuel injection system, combustion strategies, advanced sensors and process technologies for innovative low-emission diesel engines” and Training Programme “Advanced qualification of 8 researchers (graduate students) and 12 technicians (undergraduate students) specialized in development, design and testing of mechatronic components in the automotive and production sectors”. MEDIS DIH defined for this  24M€ project all the technical-scientific contents and have coordinated the technical activities of all the partners involved. Furthermore MEDIS DIH fully coordinated the training project.

2. "AMIDERHA: Mini-invasive advanced systems for diagnosis and protontherapy” and Training Programme “Advanced qualification of 12 researchers (graduate) and 8 technicians (undergraduate) specialized in engineering, developing and testing of signal processing and intelligent diagnosis systems for biomedical applications”.

 3. "INNOVHEAD: Innovative technologies for reducing emissions, fuel consumption and operating costs of heavy-duty engines” and Training Programme “Advanced qualification of 8 researchers (graduate) specialised in engineering and testing of mechatronic components and systems in powertrain”.

4. "MASSIME: Innovative mechatronic security systems (wired and wireless) for railway, aerospace and robotic applications” and Training Programme “Advanced qualification of 10 researchers (graduate students) and 10 technicians (undergraduate students) specialized in engineering and testing of innovative mechatronic safety systems for railway, aerospace and robotic applications”.

For "AMIDERHA", "INNOVHEAD" and "MASSIME" MEDIS DIH defined the technical-scientific contents and the execution planning, taking over full responsability in respect of MIUR Ministry of the project execution for a total cost amount of about 55M€. Furthermore MEDIS DIH fully coordinated the three training projects.

5. Factory Cluster (National). MEDIS DIH is also participating in the national Intelligent Factory Cluster Association which has submitted a proposal in the frame of National Technological Cluster call of the Italian Ministry MIUR. The proposal, in which MEDIS DIH is involved, was ranked in first place with a score of 330 out of 350 available. The total score is the sum of those of the strategic plan and the four projects.

6. "Apulia CPS/IoT Hub for Regional Digital Manufacturing SMEs - Apulia Manufacturing RDMI Hub".  Under the EC HORIZON 2020 programme (I4MS) MEDIS DIH is partner in this project for a feasibility study of the establishment in Apulia of a Regional Digital Manufacturing Innovation (RDMI) Hub (I4MS programme) built on specific I4MS Cyber Physical Systems (CPS)/Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Through the integration of competences of its key players, the Apulia Manufacturing RDMI Hub will be able to facilitate user-supplier partnerships across value-chains by defining a CPS/IoT Roadmap for Large firm-SMEs interaction in the Manufacturing sector.

Success Story / Achievements: 

Thanks to its own multidisciplinary experiences and technical background, the Apulian Mechatronics Technological Cluster and Digital Innovation Hub MEDIS DIH S.c. a r.l. approached and proceeded important Research and Innovation, especially PON, projects co-funded directly by Italian Ministry and EU.  

 

PON01 "EURO 6: Advanced electronic control unit, fuel injection system, combustion strategies, advanced sensors and process technologies for innovative low-emission diesel engines”. In order to fulfill the new Euro 6 standards project have allowed the development of:

- Diesel engine injection systems (electronic and hydraulic) and innovative combustion strategies;

- Process technologies optimized in synergy with the injection system design.

The project's successful results have ensured relevant additional know-how to let FCA-EMEA (Europe) keeping the world leadership in field of Diesel engine technologies and common rail injection, electronic control and strategies of combustion systems.

 

PON02 "AMIDERHA: Mini-invasive advanced systems for diagnosis and protontherapy”. The project had studied and developed new technologies for medical instrumentation dedicated to the diagnosis and radiotherapy. New technologies developed, promising for the near future, are devoted to the care of oncological diseases, in particular the diagnostic imaging based on the detection of magnetic nanoparticles or magnetic particles imaging (MPI) and related interventional techniques, and the proton therapy. These two lines of research, organized at the project level as two operation goals, share enabling technologies such as sensors, signal processing and image analysis, mechatronics, software, material physics and materials science, the biotechnology and nanotechnology, to name the most important. The main results were implementation of two experimental demonstrators, respectively, for the magnetic diagnostics and interventional percutaneous real-time imaging, and the proton therapy.

 

PON02 "INNOVHEAD: Innovative technologies for reducing emissions, fuel consumption and operating costs of heavy-duty engines”. This project had developed innovation technologies for reduction of polluting exhausts, fuel consumption and operating costs of internal combustion engines for “On Road” and “Off Road” heavy duty applications.

The proposed subject is of  topical interest for three main aspect:

1.         compulsory reduction of polluting emissions, in particular NOx, soot and CO2;

2.         increase of fuel costs and depletion of oil resources;

3.         increase of heavy duty engines operating costs due to exhaust after treatment devices that use additives (i.e. Urea).

The results had enhanced the technological exploration, starting from an application case for inspiring and exploring towards the very new technologies coming from public research centre.

 

PON02 "MASSIME: Innovative mechatronic security systems (wired and wireless) for railway, aerospace and robotic applications”. The project MASSIME had developed wired and wireless, innovative mechatronic safety systems for railway, aerospace and robotics applications, formed by a combination of sensors and microelectronic technologies and supported by a suitable software infrastructures. The implementation of each innovative solution had oriented to the growth of performance, safety and reliability, to the optimisation of the operation costs and to the recovery of parts and components,  according to an eco-friendly  disposal cycle.

 

Factory Cluster (National). MEDIS DIH is also participating in the national Intelligent Factory Cluster Association which has submitted a proposal in the frame of National Technological Cluster call of the Italian Ministry MIUR.

In the framework of MEDIS DIH activities several products have been developed by its associates. Among these the most relevant are: 1. DAS - Direct Acceleration Sensor: esassial inertial sensor for the direct measurement of the linear and angular accelerations, for the most advanced applications of motion control; 2. LASDE: encoder laser for the measurement of mechanical deformations and structural; 3. V•cube: integrated monitoring system of the binary; 4. SLM1000/2000: laser marker-doped fiber source with high efficiency; 5. EVOLIUM: axis robotic systems for intelligent mechatronic modular high reconfigurability.
