Cluster Strategy
Mission/Objectives:

For over 20 years medways e.V. has been representing the interests of the medical technology industry in Thuringia and beyond. Members of medways e. V. are globally active small and medium-sized enterprises, research institutes and universities, which are developing innovative products and methods for the diagnosis and treatment of age-correlated diseases for diverse fields of application in medicine.

With its diverse and comprehensive portfolio and with its widely scattered membership structure medways is now a central contact and competent partner for companies, research institutions as well as for the administration, such as the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Science and Digital Society (Thüringer Ministerium Wirtschaft Wissenschaft und digitale Gesellschaft TMWWDG).

medways focuses on the needs of its cluster players with a wide range of services like project management and controlling of publically funded collaborative research projects, ongoing education and training for engineers and clinical personnel and a tailored consulting and advisory service on licensing of products and regulatory requirements of the medical device market.

Research projects / project work

The medways-research center provides its extensive experience of professional project management of research groups and networks and offers a comprehensive portfolio of services for the acquisition, implementation and accounting of collaborative research projects for SMEs and research institutions. Additionally medways functions actively as a project partner or subcontractor in regulatory issues in joint projects.

Since its foundation in 2000, medways processed 31 collaborative research projects with a total volume of € 35 million. The transfer rate of research results into marketable products with a rapid return of investment is about 90%.

Additionally medways is a project partner or subcontractor in regulatory issues in joint projects.

Consulting services

medways e. V. advises SME, large corporations and startups on pre-competitive issues during the stages of development, implementation and marketing of medical devices:

As the central contact for startup companies with medical technology potential medways advises amongst other things on the relevance of the idea, feasibility, market entry, reimbursement systems and certification. For the establishment and maintenance of quality management systems according to DIN EN ISO 13485 medways supports its members with initial consultations and with an ongoing standard-compliant documentation.

medways advises and assists its members in the process of evaluating and assessing the benefits and  meeting the requirements of the statutory health insurance (SHI) systems in order to increase planning security and accelerate innovation processes. Getting access to the SHI is, of course, one of the big attainments of new medical devices.

In short, medways e. V. is a reliable partner at eye level – at every stage of your projects.

Trade fairs and congresses

Furthermore medways organizes and serves shared booths at leading international exhibitions such as MEDICA, German Ophthalmologic Association (DOG), Internationale Congress of the German ophthalmological surgeons (DOC) and Ophthalmologic Academy Germany (AAD).

For more than 10 years, medways has been organizing the shared booth of Thuringia at the world's largest medical technology trade fair MEDICA in Duesseldorf with a floor space of more than 230 m².

To push the international visibility of the Thuringian medical technology and biotechnology industry medways explores foreign target markets, establishes new (international) contacts and accompanies delegation trips. On international trips to Russia, Japan, China, Korea, India, Canada, Vietnam and Israel under the leadership of the Thuringian state government medways holds workshops to promote the innovative strenght of the Thuringian medical technology cluster to foreign governments, associations and thus supports foreign trade activities, especially of the small and medium-sized companies.

Political & International

medways represents the interests of its members and the medical and biotechnology industry  not only in economic affairs but also in political matters. With our strategic input in different committees (i.g. RIS 3, DGBMT, Spectaris, Metropolregion Mitteldeutschland) we contribute to a higher level network structure on state level, on federal level and even on European level (European S3-Platform, EEN) and as a voting member in the working group “Healthy Living and Health Care Economics” we are involved in the development of the headline targets and proposed measures for the action plan of that specialized field. Furthermore, the CEO of medways e.V. is a voting member of the highest RIS steering committee, the Clusterboard.

Further education

The business area “medways academy” offers wide-ranged professional trainings and in-house courses on questions of licensing and operating medical devices and on the introduction and maintenance of quality management systems according to DIN EN ISO 13 485. Our target audience is mid-level medical and engineering personnel.

Well known far beyond the borders of Jena is the "Technology Scouting - Breakfast for Experts" five times a year. The Technology Scouting focusses on industry-related topics and is by now very well received and attended by an average of 20 entrepreneurs per event. About 900 participants have been attending our events so far (status: January 2018)!

In-house training

We carry out in-house training courses for SMEs for the further education of employees but also covering special tasks and topics that are relevant for medical technology and biotechnology companies. According to the individual needs of the SME we are developing a professional training plan guiding through the events.

Information sessions

The funding announcements by the federal or EU authorities are highly complex. Together with the project promoters medways organizes information events to inform about and explain the relevant calls. Potential applicants will receive detailed insights into the announcement, including the evaluation criteria for the project outlines. And interested parties can discuss their individual project ideas directly with the project sponsor.
