Cluster Strategy
Mission/Objectives: 

The N.E.T. Nature Energy and Territory, a limited liability consortium company, was set up in 2011 to support the development and the strengthening of scientific and technological research infrastructures and services of the Innovation hubs of the Calabria Region, as envisaged by the ERDF Regional Operational Programme (POR) 2007/2013.

N.E.T. is today the manager of the Innovation Cluster for “Environment and Natural Risks” and this is its natural and coherent positioning, with respect to the strategic areas defined by the Calabria Region within the Intelligent Specialization Strategy S3 of Calabria POR 2014/2020. Dealing with the thematic area of Environment and Natural Risks means managing, at local and territorial level, major issues, which require urgent and specific intervention strategies in a global dimension.

On this purpose, N.E.T. includes private companies, public bodies and research organisms, among which: the University of Calabria, the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria and the CNR (National Research Council). The cluster has a significant wealth of expertise to enhance and represents the central node of a technology transfer network, able to strengthen the cooperation between the research system and the business sector in the reference area. The aggregated subjects are, on the one hand, suppliers of specialist services, on the other hand, they are bearers of innovation needs in the identified intervention sectors. The N.E.T. Hub intends to select and protect the outputs of research activities by identifying and penetrating the concerning markets and also by introducing such outputs in the economic, industrial, cultural and social processes of the territory. The cluster’s main objective is that of developing a productive dialogue between research organizations and the territory, in order to make it easier for local companies to apply consistently the results of scientific and technological research in these fields: business can transform research outputs into services, products and/or processes, which are also useful to spread an innovation culture at local level and therefore to ensure a better management of its territorial peculiarities. The cluster mission is therefore to stimulate and activate innovation processes in the area of ​​reference, by strengthening and consolidating its role as a research intermediary in Calabria Region: innovation processes can be stimulated and activated; the regional research system and the business networks can be enhanced. In this frame the construction of an industrial and scientific chain, able to consolidate within the Calabria Region and at the same time to connect to national and international networks, can be made possible.

The NET Business Plan assigns a fundamental role to the system of production and provision of specialized services, which are offered by the Hub to the system of regional, national and international companies, and more generally to all public or private stakeholders, through the present “Catalog of Services”. The proposed Services make use of the already consolidated technical experience, technological supports and equipment present in the innovative laboratories installed at the NET offices, at the companies belonging to the Consortium and / or at the Research Bodies (mainly the Universities of Calabria – UniCal, the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria – UniRC and the CNR, in their respective fields of competence and specialization). All services are provided in accordance with current regulations and in the manner better specified in the Service Charter, which contains the operating principles of the “Hub system” and constitutes an integral and complementary part of it. The Services of the Catalog are offered through the Net website, the Electronic Market of Public Administrations and the Hub’s commercial network, which promotes and collects the demand at regional and extra-regional level and customizes the services, by defining the technical specifications and related costs. The Catalog Services available today are organized according to areas and trajectories of reference, which are specified in the specific table.

Success Story / Achievements: 

1) PlastiLab - Green Innovation is an innovative start-up born in 2019 with headquarters in Crotone. It operates in the Research and Innovation sector for the production of products and services aimed at eco-sustainability. PlastiLab is included in the cluster investment plan. It co-finances and manages the laboratory for the study, prototyping and realization of objects from second generation plastic materials. It therefore supports the sustainable use of plastic waste. Through the study and development of new technological systems for the recovery and conversion of waste deriving from post-industrial and urban consumption, it is proposed to carry out targeted research programs, carry out designs with prototypes, carry out production and marketing of products and / or semi-finished products made of ecological material, in the frame of both national and international environmental trends. The positive impact on the majority of participants in the cluster and on Industry in general is evident. Among the company's missions, the main one is to support cluster companies through Research and Development activities in view to find a correct location and finalization of plastic waste or in view to insert second life plastic material (PSV) in their ordinary production. Within the relating production chain, all partners are provided with a competitive advantage in terms of sustainability and economic profit. Relevant strategic objectives of the cluster are wholly matched: the startup main objective is the promotion of second life plastic reuse, therefore the correct finalization of plastic waste in the South of Italy, where the Cluster Strategy take place and where great efforts are being made to achieve the mandatory collection targets of waste differentiation, which are imposed by the European Union. PlastiLab could enhance the creation of short chains of plastic waste management with the reuse of second life plastics or derivatives. This objective is specifically relevant with one of the priorities of NET, the "Environment and Natural Risks" cluster, namely the enhancement of resources through the reuse of waste to reduce the environmental impact. For all of the services provided, PlastiLab grants royalties on turnover to NET Scarl, the managing body of the cluster, thus contributing to the sustainability of the development and organization of the cluster. In addition, it allows to increase the offer of the companies in the cluster by making its own organization and human resources available in the provision of specialized services.

 

2) Ecolandia Scrl (a partner of NET cluster) hosts the NET headquarter in Reggio Calabria with its prototypes and technological and research infrastructures. Ecolandia is a recreational, technological and environmental park, performing high quality educational standards. In this context, NET takes care of the realization, implementation and management of the scientific-technological aspects of the Park, contributing, through a series of information to training and technology transfer activities and especially to the dissemination and diffusion of technical knowledge and innovation in the environment and natural hazards sector. The activities carried out in the Ecolandia-NET Laboratories are enjoyed all year round by students, groups of tourists, and companies from the regional and extra-regional territory. Ecolandia-Net is a practice of scientific dissemination on cluster themes, with high positive impact, annually involving around 10,000 school students from all levels and degrees and a few thousand of citizens and businesses, who periodically visit the Park. The degree of contribution provided by Ecolandia-NET Laboratories to the strategic objectives of scientific and cultural dissemination and diffusion of the cluster itself is high and pertinent. The Technological Laboratories are included in a service promotion catalog, especially describing the Ecolandia-NET renewable energy and electric vehicles, the Piezoelectric cycle path with speed variators, the Fablab laboratory for recycling and reuse of material. All of these services relate to innovation technology and reduction of energy consumption in production processes, voluntary CO2 compensation, energy efficiency of engines and structures and also contribute to generating economic income for the sustainability of the cluster.

 

3) NET is concretely committed to the issues of internationalization and international cooperation by introducing innovative strategic objectives in these activities. The experience of South-South Cooperation in progress (Calabria / Kenya) is an example of a new concept of Internationalization declined within the Civil Economy, therefore performing a high social impact for the whole cluster. This is intended to combine production and profit needs of both European and African businesses and to conciliate these with the primary needs of disadvantaged communities (both African villages and European suburbs). Through the creation of an international NET headquarter at the IKSDP of Nyandiwa - Lake Victoria in Kenya, an innovative and social agriculture project has developed around the cultivation of Jatropha Curcas, with the extraction of biodiesel oil from the pressing of seeds, nutraceutical and medical applications from the leaves, the production of wood chips from the squeezing residue. This innovation in production processes duplicates a pilot and experimental activity performed in Italy at the NET headquarter in Ecolandia. In this frame, Net also supports the scientific development and patenting of products derived from the Jatropha chain, through two main research projects: the (concluded) SIreja project and the (current) Ingegno project. This provides a valuable contribution to the achievement of the strategic objectives of the cluster, both in Italy and Kenya, within the two suburbs involved: Nyandiwa and Reggio Calabria. The interest in the international initiative is attested by the wide network of subjects, public and private, who support the project called "Harambee", with important implications and potential developments also for the economic sustainability of the same cluster.

The NET cluster provides important support to consolidated knowledge and technology transfer in all relevant fields of Environmental and Natural Risks sector. The specific technological trajectories addressed by the cluster are able to enhance crucial innovation and entrepreneurial activities among the committed participants. The high secto-based specialization of the cluster is a reason to be choosen by concerned companies. We provide description of the NET technological trajectories, as follows.

Techniques, products and devices fpr the analysis and evaluation of hydrogeological risk and other environmental risk

The achievement of an adequate level of knowledge of the territory and evaluation of the various phenomena at the local level and on a larger scale requires: simulations with mathematical models, in the laboratory and in the natural environment; advanced hydrological, hydraulic, geological, geotechnical and environmental investigation techniques; advanced geographic information systems; high precision survey techniques in different contexts; advanced remote sensing and data analysis techniques; methodologies and tools for identifying vulnerable elements and for drawing up hazard maps, vulnerability and risk maps for floods, landslides, forest fires, droughts, storm surges, erosion. Furthermore, the real-time observation of the evolution of natural phenomena related to environmental risks requires effective and efficient monitoring systems that integrate electronic, IT and telecommunications expertise to develop intelligent detection networks.

Devices, sensors and solutions for the seismic protection of territories

This trajectory regards: prototyping, construction and certification of anti-seismic devices in the field of construction and infrastructure; mechanical and performance characterization of innovative materials and structural reinforcement systems in existing buildings. It also regards the organization and sharing of the data transmission network, the integration of visual monitoring systems; the support for the quantitative and qualitative development of the monitoring model of the Seismic Observatory of Structures which, in Calabria, could develop capillary branching potential, transforming it from a sampling system into a system of continuous monitoring and support for the operation of the post-emergency earthquake.

Early warning systems and early management of environmental risks

The early warning systems integrate the analysis and monitoring components with pre-announcement models, with decision support systems and with command and control systems up to, for emergency management, the creation of operating rooms. The trajectory also concerns mobile systems for detecting in emergency conditions, to analysis and infrastructure management (eg for mobility and transport), areas and crowd dynamics in si-critical statements.

New energy technologies for the production, distribution and storage of energy from renewable sources

The trajectory includes:

  • new energy technologies for the production of energy from renewable sources, for distribution and storage;
  • systems and technologies for waste management and for the recovery of civil and industrial waste that promote a more rational use of resources and a reduction of harmful emissions in the environment.
