Cluster Strategy
Mission/Objectives:

The Technology Park of Andalucía, located in Málaga, is a high-quality location in which to set up SMEs and large businesses that are innovative, respectful of the environment and geared towards manufacturing, advanced services and R+D. One of the PTA’s and its companies’ ingredients for success is the business development model that has been applied at the Park since it opened. An entrepreneurial culture and a tradition of ongoing enterprise are fundamental to the sustainability of the business development model that has been created at the PTA; the entrepreneurs that started off in the business incubators and pre-incubators have become, in many cases, much larger companies who continue to carry out their activities at the PTA. Actually, the park counts with around 620 companies for different sectors such as ICT, Biotechnology, Engineering, Industry, HHRR, etc, and more than 16.000 employees.

In 2015, the Andalusia Technology Park (PTA) created a building called "The Green Ray", on the Campus of the University of Malaga (UMA) with the aim of developing a common strategy between the PTA and UMA in the field of entrepreneurial knowledge and support. In addition to innovation, there are two main factors underpinning this strategy. Entrepreneurs at the 'The Green Ray' have to use the science and knowledge developed at the University, and also have to possess the ambition to be global entrepreneurs. As a meeting point between the University and the company, Link by UMA-ATech is the biggest business, university, and innovative living space of Andalusia. Here entrepreneurs create their businesses and progress with them from scratch, but, in addition, already established companies find new ways to keep growing.

Please explain:

In terms of internationalisation, the managing entity of the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía works closely with entities such as chambers of commerce, national governments, universities, embassies ... etc. The PTA fosters the development of technological communication and co-operation networks amongst the different entities that comprise it, thereby permitting the transfer of technological knowledge and the promotion of business collaboration in an ever-more international sphere.

MÁLAGA GLOBAL, INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY GROUP

In adition, the managing entity of the PTA organises and coordinates a work group whose main objective is to unite international development strategies, such as the sharing of projects on a global scale and the search for joint ventures. The International Strategy Group is made up of the most important institutions in the city: The City Council, Chamber of Commerce, Confederation of Employers of Málaga (CEM), Provincial Council, Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía-PTA and the University of Málaga-UMA, as well as the CIEDES Foundation, Promálaga and Bic Euronova. This group was started with the goal of encouraging internationalisation, not just for Málaga companies, but for the city and province. The setting up of “Málaga Global”, a promotional tool designed to be a business card, stands out among its main successes. It is a video that merges various aspects of the province, fusing together the main highlights that make it unique.

Listed below are some of the most recent European projects which the PTA has participated in:

MED TECHNOPOLIS

Under the European MED program, the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía developed the Med Technopolis project together with ten other European entities. During the three year duration of the project, the main goals of Med Technopolis were to implement a Mediterranean Network of Technology Interface Structures (EIT) for the renovation of currently-existing EITs and expansion towards new regions of the Mediterranean, by creating technological zones in areas with little business or economic development. As a result, 50 companies were created, 140 business ideas were formed, and 8 centres for economic, social and environmental innovation were set up. Furthermore, 4 international meetings took place, giving rise to more than 300 B2B meetings between companies, a European network of entrepreneurs was created, and a training centre was finalised for them.

ZERO HYTECHPARK

With the goal of reducing carbon footprint, the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía, and the Bizkaia and Walqa (Huesca) parks are collaborating to develop a system that combines renewable energies with the use of hydrogen-based technologies to drastically reduce CO2 emissions. All this operates under the management of the Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragón, with the support of the Regional Government and co-financed by the EU.

SMART MED PARKS

The SMART-MED-PARK project is co-financed with ERDF funds from the European Commission through the MED program and led by the Andalucian Technology Institute (IAT). Together with the IAT and the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía, seven other organisations from Slovenia, Croatia, Portugal, France, Italy and Spain are participating in this new initiative to improve energy efficiency in Mediterranean-area technology parks. The main goals of the project are the development of a new generation of science and technology parks, energy self-sufficiency through integration with existing energy networks and the generation of local, green energy,  energy-saving related to the losses in the distribution and transportation network, and the promotion of a self-sufficient model of energy production and consumption.

ERASMUS MUNDUS THELXINOE

The PTA, together with the University of Málaga and various partners from France, Greece, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Australia and New Zealand are collaborating in a project within the Erasmus Mundus program, whose aim is the creation of a strong, sustainable and long-term network (TELXÍNOE-N) between EU institutions to promote academic, cultural, social and economic links.

The Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía participates in the development of projects at regional, European and international levels. The Park is involved in all project phases, from the design, drafting and negotiation of proposals up to the search for collaborators and partners, managing all the stages of the process: beginning, planning, execution, control and closing.

Promotion
Success Story / Achievements:

The Andalusia Technology Park (PTA) has created 'The Green Ray', building housing entrepreneurs who wish to be global players, on the Campus of the University of Malaga (UMA) with the aim of developing a common strategy between the PTA and UMA in the field of entrepreneurial knowledge and support.

The cooperation between the Technology Park of Malaga (PTA) and the University of Malaga (UMA) have emerged as transformational entrepreneurship, ie, by analyzing the talent that impacts on the economic but also in social innovation ecosystems that are created when there is a connection between university science and technology park and company and the importance of inclusion in the training plans of the university courses on innovative culture.
