Blockchain for Industry_0

Description

The Directorate-General Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) of the European Commission organised a conference on “Blockchain for Industry” on Thursday, 09 November 2023. It will take place from 13.30 to 18.00 h in the Sofitel, Place Jourdan 1, Brussels.

The conference forms part of the policy work on the digital transformation of industry in the respective DG GROW unit, notably with a view to contribute to the preparation of the upcoming policy cycle 2024-29. As soon as 2016, the European Commission declared that blockchain – as a fundamental societal breakthrough technology with unique properties – will be an innovation priority for all policy areas in the EU in the next decades, especially for the real economy. While most of the policy work so far has focused on blockchain applications in finance, the maturity and proven utility of blockchain is now leading to wide-spread use also in industrial ecosystems. This trend will further accelerate and rapidly increase the opportunity space for European businesses in the years to come. The discussions on these opportunities during the conference will be structured around three key topics in order to identify, discuss and prepare future initiatives and projects in these areas: 1. Blockchain as a game changer for the digital and green transitions of industrial ecosystems; 2. Entrepreneurial cooperation in decentralised digital spaces that results in new forms to do business, in particular by setting up decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs); and 3. Blockchain-based solutions to ensure safe, ethical and green supply chains (including the European anti-counterfeiting blockchain infrastructure, programmable payments and the emerging Digital Product Passport). The conference will bring together decision makers and leading European experts from the public and private sector, including the Belgian Secretary of State for Digitisation Mathieu Michel, MEP Ondřej Kovařík, senior European Commission representatives as well as industry leaders, start-ups and the leading experts from Europe’s most significant blockchain associations. These associations will come forward during the event with a joint forward-looking statement, followed by conclusions from DG GROW.
