Description

In the wake of the pandemic - what does ‘A European retail sector fit for the 21st Century’ mean?

Local decision makers are invited to find out more about the European Commission’s policy on retail and explore what comes next for the retail sector after the forced closures due to COVID-19 in an interactive virtual workshop.

  • Workshop 1: 1 & 2 October 2020 (morning only)
  • Workshop 2: 20 & 21 October 2020 (morning only)

Participants will hear from Member States to learn about what the crisis has taught them about the problems that the retail sector faces and look to the future to discuss how to support recovery particularly at the local level for small retailers in the city centres.

This is an opportunity for participants to see how different Member States approach regulating retail and what could support the recovery of the retail sector in the short and long term. Participants will consider whether the Commission’s Communication ‘A European retail sector fit for the 21st Century’ can help that recovery as well as what needs to be known about the Services Directive at the local level.

Through an explanation of a best practice from the experts, participants will be able to see how the ideas in the Commission’s ‘Facing the Future’ guide work in practice and how initiatives to revitalise small retailers have adapted as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

The interactive virtual format of the workshops shall give participants the opportunity to pick up practical tips, ask questions, network and work out what they can do in their own local area.
