Description

What are “Smart Cities”?

A smart city is a place where traditional networks and services are made more efficient with the use of digital and telecommunication technologies for the benefit of its inhabitants and business (European Commission n.d.).

For instance, in regards to Singapore, its Smart Nation initiative started in 2014, and has resulted in projects ranging from digital government services, the deployment of autonomous vehicles, and using technology to improve the built environment.

With that movement/revolution, urbanisation has emerged and as you might know, it is a never-ending phenomenon.

To illustrate, by 2030 a further 90 million people are expected to have moved into cities across South-East Asia (SEA). Within this context, European SMEs tend to provide highly innovative niche solutions that only work in combination with a number of other interdependent technologies.

This might require an SME to disclose its innovations to third parties, increasing the risk of copying if no measures for IP protection are in place before entering the respective market. It is crucial to establish a comprehensive IP strategy that considers all available forms of IP protection in order to minimise the risks associated with entering markets in SEA.

In this framework, Singapore Economic Development Board and South-East Asia IPR SME Helpdesk would like to invite you to join this live session and stay tuned to hear how SEA in general, and Singapore specifically, has partnered companies to develop these projects. You will learn about the upcoming opportunities that companies can participate in and, more importantly, how you can protect & enforce your IP rights for the Smart Cities Industry in these particular region.

Speakers:

  • Marianne Tan – Regional Director from the Singapore Economic Development Board (Based in Paris).
  • James Kinnaird, PhD – External Expert of SEA IPR SME Helpdesk & Partner of Marks & Clerk Singapore LLP.
