Clusters of Social and Ecological Innovation
The GECES Expert group on Social Economy and Social Enterprises has done research on the existance of Clusters of Social and Ecological Innovation.
These can be defined as: Groups of social economy enterprises and other related supporting actors that cooperate in a particular location to improve the role of social economy enterprises in economic development and increase the social and ecologic impact of its members by enhancing their cooperation, pooling resources and innovation capacity.
Some of their characteristics are:
1.Social economy "clusterisation" is a recent and growing ecosystem movement in the EU. 2.The vast majority of clusters have their activity confined to a political-administrative jurisdiction or frontier: proximite in terms of region, city, community or even a specific site. 3.The vast majority is cross-sectoral. Some sectoral exceptions: manufacturing, creative industries & education. 4.A majority congregates 3 to 5 different types of organisations, which express wider and more complex forms of cooperation, ideally in a quadruple context. 5.Ideal format for integrated traditional business – SE cooperation, for example based on SDG's. 6.Majority of clusters are of small and medium size (20-40 members) 7.Job creation & social innovation is the most pursued priority. 8.Majority of clusters present a financial model characterized by multiple sources of income.These type of clusters are under their collaboration spirit opening up to many ties and links with any other SME and cluster.

As our mapping is still early stage and we are looking for similar clusters. Our final goal is to bring these as full partners in the ECCP and have them cooperated or even merged with other economic clusters in their ecosystem. Some of the examples are representing hybrid forms where as well social enterprises as regular SME's are represented.
