Over 17-19 February, representatives from Energy Agency Fukushima followed a tight schedule of meetings to identify partnership opportunities between Basque and Japanese companies, with the aim of preparing for the upcoming roll-out of renewable energies and hydrogen techniques in Japan.

As one of the initiatives deriving from the partnership agreement reached with the Basque Energy Cluster in May 2019, Energy Agency Fukushima executives Yasuhiro Hattori, Managing Director, and Takao Kakizaki, International Relations Coordinator, paid a visit to the region over 17-19 February.

The purpose of the visit was to analyse and define partnership opportunities with Basque companies, with a view to preparing for the forthcoming major roll-out of renewable energies and hydrogen technologies in Japan. According to the JWPA, Japan hopes to install an additional wind energy capacity of 30 GW by 2030, while the Fukushima prefecture has been selected to supply hydrogen for the buses to be used during the Tokyo Olympics. Moreover, Fukushima has been chosen by the Japanese government to lead the country's upcoming energy transition.

The EAF delegation was warmly welcomed by the Basque companies and, in addition to visiting the new TECNALIA hydrogen lab in San Sebastian, they also inspected the prototype developed by SAITEC OFFSHORE TECNOLOGIES, to be launched shortly in Santander, and toured the NAVACEL facility in Erandio. The pair also held individual meetings with AEROBLADE, ALERION, ANTEC, DITREL, ESTEYCO, EUSKAL FORGING, HAIZEA WIND, HWS TOWERS, IDOM, ISATI, NABRAWIND, SENER, SIEMENS GAMESA and UPV-EHU. The agenda was rounded off with a meeting with the Basque Energy Cluster and representatives from Basque Trade & Investment (BTI), where they discussed the initiatives to be put into place in 2020 as part of the partnership between the two regions.
