The European Commission has announced its steady commitment to continue the provision of medical equipment in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Emergency Support Instrument is the financing arm of the Joint European Roadmap towards lifting COVID-19 containment measures. It provides direct support to help European Union Member States, especially in the healthcare sector, in order to mitigate the immediate acute consequences of the pandemic and anticipate the needs related to the exit and recovery.

In full solidarity, the Emergency Support Instrument with a budget of €2.7 billion, pools efforts and resources to quickly address strategic needs. It is an important European top-up for the existing national and European measures to tackle the ongoing public health crisis. In the context of this aid instrument, the European Commission has promised to deliver 1.5 million masks to 17 EU Member States and the United Kingdom to protect healthcare workers against the spread of COVID-19. 10 million of the masks will be disseminated over the coming weeks to ease the impacts of the pandemic.
