The European Union represented by Low Carbon Action at the 3rd Edition of the Biomass Day

Between May 21 and May 23, the 3rd International Biomass Fair (Biomass Day) took place in Sao Polo. This event was the occasion for major actors of the international market to discuss the immense potential of biomass, notably for generation of electricity, steam, fuel, second generation ethanol and other bioproducts. It was also the occasion for present institutions to discuss legislation issues and the future of renewable energies

Mercedez Blázquez, head of the The Low Carbon Brazil initiative led by the European Union seized the opportunity of this fair to expose the two initiative’s projects’ progress covering in the sector of waste management, biomass and biogas. The solutions deployed for these projects, relying on European technologies, echo well the topic of this fair. The first solution will be applied notably to the treatment of organic waste produced by a food distribution centre in Curitiba. The second project was initiated by the German company ME LE Energietechnik, which is studying the feasibility of developing in a sugarcane mill in Goiás, the first concept of technological bio-digestor for the treatment of sugarcane waste, in order to generate decentralized energy.

Ms Blázquez told more about these initiatives and the reduction of environmental impacts the projects are intended for.  If she underlined the potential of Biogas in Brazil, she stated that capital expenses and investments were required to make initiatives for Biomass economically viable. She notably pointed out that according to some experts, there was a lack of international technology in order for the local project to be a future solution. The head of Low Carbon Brazil ended by stressing the need for Brazil to endow itself of advanced technologies, especially in the use of environmental liabilities, in order to convert them into energy asset for the agri-food industry.

This fair was also the occasion to attend talks and debates, with the participation of major persons and institutions such as the entrepreneur André Tchernobilsky, (founder of ZEG Ambiental, who participates in Low Carbon Brazil), or the International Centre for Renewable Energies – Biogas.
