Flagship area “Renovate”

Summary of the European Alliance Against Coronavirus Webinar on 19 October 2020

In order to benefit from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the main instrument for the European economic recovery, Member States should submit their draft recovery and resilience plans outlining national investment and reform agendas that are in line with the EU policy criteria. The Commission strongly encourages Member States to include in their plans investment and reforms in seven flagship areas: Power up, Renovate, Recharge and Refuel, Connect, Modernise, Scale-up, and Reskill & Upskill.

The flagship area “Renovate” is defined in the Annual Growth Strategy 2021:

Improving the energy and resource efficiency of public and private buildings will substantially contribute to achieving the EU’s climate objectives, create a large number of local jobs throughout the Member States and foster digital development through smart living and metering. By 2025, it will contribute to the doubling of the renovation rate and the fostering of deep renovation.

This flagship area is strongly linked with the upcoming “Renovation wave”, published by the European Commission on 14 October 2020. Key principles of the renovation wave are energy efficiency, affordability, decarbonisation and integration of renewables (heating and cooling), circularity, use of organic materials, environmental standards, tackling green and digital transition together, and respect for aesthetic and architectural values.

Silvia Rossi from Clust-ER BUILD presented the activities of her cluster in this area and underlined the importance of applying innovative technology and smart management to renovation and building projects.
