Industrial Ecosystems: Tourism
Summary of the European Alliance Against Coronavirus Daily Webinar on 14 September 2020
The tourism ecosystem is one of the hardest ones hit by the COVID-19 crisis. It encompasses accommodation providers, travel operators, hospitality, and transport, as explained by Milosz Momot in this webinar. There are no visible signs of recovery at present and especially the SMEs in this ecosystem deals with uncertainty in the medium- and long-term future. A restart should be made along sustainability to protect businesses and jobs, build economic resilience, and push the green and digital transition.
Panagiotis Gkofas from the European Economic and Social Committee shared the results of their questionnaire to companies, which show that 88.2 % of the businesses that answered are affected very negatively by the current situation. The EESC asks for a European mechanism to monitor the implementation of support measures, especially regarding liquidity.
Antonio López de Ávila from TURISFERA presented the cluster´s activities to restructure the tourism sector on the Canary Islands. They are implementing projects on green transition, including on biogas as a clean energy source, a voluntary emission market, and recycling. Furthermore, they are working on skills to create an easier business environment and open up to new industries.
Luděk Kühr reported that the Czech tourism industry is still under shock, with only partially receiving the needed support from the government. The tourism ecosystem has to undergo a change and, as well as the travellers have to adapt their expectations to the new situation. People are open for inspiration on where to go. The digital transformation might provide a way for change and innovation of the ecosystem.
