Market Access Support for EU Business in Canada under CETA
The CETA Market Access Programme was launched in January 2017 by the European Union to help EU businesses, particularly SMEs, gain comprehensive and sector-specific information about the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU in Canada, provisionally implemented since 21 September 2017.
The CETA Programme has already achieved enhanced communications amongst EU stakeholders and businesses already in Canada, through its cooperation with the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Canada. In 2017 and 2018, it held workshops in Toronto targeted towards EU businesses and CETA’s benefits for them. The Programme has also built a large database of trade-related contacts throughout Canada that can serve as a first point of access for EU businesses looking to access the Canadian market. Meanwhile, research on relevant issues related to CETA have continually been delivered by the Programme for EU business, including a study on the Canadian government’s implementation of CETA, a market barriers report on the Canadian market, an expert report on CETA’s opportunities for EU business, and a guide to Geographical Indications (GIs) in Canada. Additionally, sector-specific articles have been published on quarterly basis on the Programme’s website.
Since the start of 2019, the CETA Programme has focused on enhancing its communications with stakeholders within Europe, in its efforts to support the EU businesses in their journey to the Canadian market in the context of CETA. Over the next two years, the CETA Programme will be releasing numerous practical materials designed for Canadian market access, including webinars, sector-specific articles and guides, CETA-related issue reports, and multiple videos of EU business success stories in Canada. Two CETA workshops will also be held in Brussels, designed to explain CETA and its benefits to the EU’s producers and exporters in a business-friendly and jargon-free manner.
