Summary of the European Alliance Against Coronavirus Daily Webinar on 4 September 2020

This session was dedicated to the relationship between clusters and S3 Thematic Platforms. Fernando Mérida Martin, Isabelle Seigneur from the Joint Research Centre outlined the concept of smart specialisation and its current challenges. Smart specialisation is a place-based approach to research and innovation policy to boost growth and jobs in Europe. It is aligned with the region´s own competitive advantages. The thematic platforms help ecosystems to connect and to provide an environment for the different stakeholders. Based on local priorities, regions have partnered around areas of common interested and joined forces to avoid duplication and achieve critical mass.

To further improve smart specialisation, the team is working to improve internal connectivity, connecting it to macro-regional and European knowledge systems, and fostering interregional cooperation. Clusters can deliver S3 interregional investments through better communication and collaboration, ensuring an active entrepreneurial discovery process on the group, increasing the participation of industry, provide key information on needs and challenges, and bringing market-oriented knowledge and business capacities.

Ilari Havukainen from Regional Council of Lapland, Marisa Fernández Soler from Water Smart Territories, Simon Maas from Smart Sensors 4 Agri-food and Felipe Carrasco from Smart Regional Investments in Textile Innovation gave example of how smart specialisation strategies can be put into practice. Each region has its own priorities, but they count with close collaboration, efficient governance, and fast reactions to make the projects successful.
