United States: The Government Accountability Office points out R&D as key to the country’s competitiveness

Submitted by Caroline Guillet on 19 March 2018

The Government Accountability Office, whose mission is to ensure that congress members are aware and informed, and that the federal government is accountable just released its 2018 – 2023 strategy. In a context of budget cuts on research and innovation, the GAO reminds that science and technology are indispensable to the country’s wealth, societal development and competitiveness.

The report identifies five technologies which are critical both for the economy and for society: “genome editing, artificial intelligence and automation, quantum information science, brain and augmented reality, as well as cryptocurrencies and blockchains”, as reported by SSTI.

The GAO report is not a claim to develop state support to develop research and development, but rather a tool to raise awareness on these critical technologies, as a way to create economic development, of course, but also, to bring a response to some of today’s main societal challenges.
