Basque companies show off their potential in smart grids in Amsterdam

Submitted by Jose Hormaeche on 15 November 2017

The European Utility Week (EUW 2017), the most important European fair in the smart electric networks sector, also known as “Smart grids”, was held in Amsterdam from 3rd to 5th October and attended by over 10,000 professionals and experts from all over the world.

6 Basque companies and research entities have participated in the EUW 2017 on a joint stand of 100 m2, coordinated and organised by the Basque Energy Cluster under the “Smart Grids Basque Country” brand. The participating organisations were: ArtecheMerytronicOrmazabalTecnaliaSupra and ZIV.

Part of the stand was devoted to presenting the SECUREGRID collaboration project, financed by the Basque Government's Department for Economic Development and Infrastructures (HAZITEK Programme) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The project, led by ZIV, focuses on the security of electric substations of the high and medium voltage network and their electronic equipment, whose characteristics and remote communication capacities through communication networks make them one of the key points of smart grids.

About the Project Securegrid

The SecureGrid project focuses on the security of power substations in the high and medium voltage network and their electronic equipment, Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), whose electronic features and remote communication capacity through communication networks represent one of the most vulnerable points of Smart Grids. CHALLENGE: increase (or improve) the security level of IEDs in order to guarantee greater service availability. DIFFERENTIAL VALUE: offer an integral interoperable solution at substation level, specifying the minimum architecture requirements or possible reference architectures of IEDs by type and required security level and the necessary solution so that the system is resilient. GOAL: Position the Basque Country as a global benchmark in the field of cyber-security in Smart Grids.
