Environmental Readings Bulletin Volumen 05: Environmental Impact of Wind Farms

Submitted by Marta Laura Carranza on 16 April 2018

There is no doubt that the generation of energy through renewable resources (renewable energy) is the option to consider in the near future, because Mexico has a high potential in this type of resources and its compatibility with environmental care. About 1% of the energy produced during the year 2017 in the country came from wind power (SENER, 2017) and is expected to continue growing, so it is necessary to consider the possible environmental impacts that may occur when increasing the number of wind farms and consequently the number of wind turbines. Among the main environmental impacts that have been noticed in different studies and projects worldwide that affect the generation of electricity by wind power are the landscape, patterns of wind circulation, sound comfort, fauna and vegetation.
