Stop Waste - Save Food

Submitted by Simone Hagenauer on 11 May 2020

In the cross-industry research project "Stop Waste - Save Food", members of the Plastics Cluster and the Food Cluster Lower Austria investigated the extent to which newly developed food packaging and food processing solutions can contribute to a reduction in food waste through demonstrably improved product quality, optimised product protection and extended shelf life.

By developing a multidisciplinary approach, specific case studies for different food product groups (e.g.. meat products, fruit & vegetables) were used to investigate concrete effects of the novel packaging solutions and optimised processing concepts on the food itself, in terms of quality and shelf life, as well as ecological and economic sustainability, and on the retail sector and especially on the consumer level.

We would like to share with you one of the results of this 3-year project, a guideline that has been created to support the food packaging industry and the related sectors of food producers and trade in developing and implementing sustainable solutions with improved product protection to reduce the amount of LM waste:

Stop Waste - Save Food: A guide for packaging manufactureres, foof processors, retailers, political institutions & NGOs.
