Last year, over 9 billion kilograms of coffee were consumed worldwide, of which 30% in the European Union (EU). Caffeine is less than 2% of coffee’s composition. Coffee is the largest source of antioxidants for the Western population, composed of the proteins, sugars, polyphenols, triglycerides, amongst others. All of the above are of high value for human health and skin. However, less than 1% of these compounds end up in a cup of coffee. The 99% left remains intact inside the spent coffee grounds, which most commonly are disposed of as waste; decomposing in landfills or incinerated, which generate methane (340m3/ton). This is a challenge as there is still a lot of value yet to be extracted from this resource, therefore, a lot of environmental harm to be avoided.

Solution providerKaffe Bueno is a biotech company using coffee's by-product as a platform to produce ingredients for cosmetics, nutraceuticals and functional foods. Kaffe Bueno developed a device to extend the life of spent coffee grounds without compromising their nutritional value. The device is placed at origin (location where coffee-waste is produced, i.e. hotels), which allows the natural preservation of the biomass, enabling Kaffe Bueno to upcycle it into high-value ingredients used in the food and other health-related purposes. This solution could reduce the amount of energy used to recycle or dispose of food waste in traditional methods. Kaffe Bueno’s solution reduces logistics costs, energy consumption and also prevent contamination.

Kaffe Bueno Circular Model

Kaffe Bueno has Biopreservation System which is placed at hotels, offices, or industrial coffee producers, allowing the preservation of coffee grounds by eliminating the risk of mould growth. Kaffe Bueno offers a free recycling service to these organisations by sub-contracting a waste management company who collects the grounds and delivers it to Kaffe Bueno. Then, Kaffe Bueno fractionates the spent coffee grounds into their major compounds to valorise them in different industries as ingredients.
