White Paper on Big Data

Submitted by Guillaume Roux on 28 November 2016

Big data is a hot topic today in the Information Technology industry. A promise to discover gold in the data for some people or more pressure on IT for others, the Big Data topic is certainly carrying a lot of expectations and getting attention of all CIOs.  According to a Gartner research, 64% of organizations surveyed are already investing or planning to invest in Big Data (Gartner, 2014).

The Competitiveness cluster (cluster SCS) of the PACA Region (Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur) has created an inter-company workgroup on Big Data in October 2013 through an initiative of HP. The goal of this workgroup is to combine and leverage Big Data knowledge and technologies brought by Industrial, academics and users community partners from the cluster.

The objective of this white paper is to clarify some of the concepts and solutions around Big Data in order to better understand the related challenges and opportunities. This document also describes the SCS Big Data workgroup objectives and capabilities to address it.

This paper doesn’t pretend to be exhaustive on the Big Data subject, nor is it intended to recommend one specific solution. It doesn’t assume, or require any knowledge of Big Data or deep computing skills with the possible exception of those paragraphs covering technical architectures, and here the diagrams should help explain the concepts.

A web search on Big Data generates nearly a billion initial results. There is definitively “Big Data on Big Data”. This naturally led us to use a Big Data tool to build this document.
