Description

A panel debate on Cluster Excellence for Digital Creative Industries will take place on the 30th of November, 14:30 – 16:30, at the Patronato room of Reina Sofía Museum, during the NEM Summit 2017 in Madrid. Jakob Stoumann from Oxford Research and Nicolai Sederberg from Rottboll, Quercus Group (former manager of CLEAN cluster in Denmark) will lead the workshop and an open discussion will follow on how to create closer relationships between cluster managers and staff, challenges and day-to-day life issues that affect all of the clusters.

In particular, the following subjects will be covered:

Clusters – what and why

Clustering has long been recognized as a key tool for fostering regional growth and economic development. However, like ‘innovation’ clustering has become a somehow blurry concept that many talks about and use in various connections. In his presentation, Jakob will take you through an essential ‘clusters what and why session’ discussing some of the key questions, which are crucial for all being involved in with cluster development: What are clusters more exactly, how do they occur, what are the dynamics and key factors driving strong clusters, can we create clusters, and what are the differences between ‘clusters’ and ‘cluster initiatives’? Most importantly, Jakob will also discuss if clusters and clustering really matters:  Do clusters actually  forge economic and regional development and why should we aim for cluster development at all?

Specific attention will be given at the digital creative industries where Jakob will discuss why clustering and cluster development approaches is maybe even more crucial here than in any other industries.

How to create real value through clustering?

Cluster organisations throughout Europe arise with the aim of supporting local competitiveness, innovation, and regional economic growth. But how do cluster organisations move from big ambitions and good intentions to real value creation – even with small money? As a cluster developer and former director of one of Europe's most successful cluster organisations, Nicolai will share his practical experience and discuss how to create true stakeholder engagement, how to serve the always broad variety of stakeholder interests, how to build strong membership models and long term business models for cluster initiatives, how to organise to optimise the cluster’s impact, and how to reach out for international cluster-to-cluster collaboration.

Nicolai brings a backpack of tools, cases and anecdotes and invites for a truly interactive session where the audience gets the chance to discuss their everyday cluster issues with a wholehearted cluster enthusiast and practitioner with hands-on cluster experience from more than 25 countries.

To register for the Summit and see more details on the program, go on the NEM webpage: https://nem-initiative.org. Registration will be open until 24 November.
