Description

The production of packaging is becoming more sophisticated and automated. High efficiency and automation is almost an essential if converters are to remain competitive. Can we keep production at home or must it be moved overseas? Or is it already on the way back from markets as far away as Asia? There are certainly some who believe this to be the case. New technologies are providing new opportunities and the salary component of production is becoming less of an issue as automation increases. Robots are becoming more advanced and are doing more and more jobs. The concept of the “Black Factory” ‒ i.e. production without any staff ‒ has been around for many years, but will it ever become a reality? If not, how will man and machine communicate in order to make production easier? Industrial robots have become cheaper, more intelligent, easier to program and more secure since they first appeared in the 1970s.

New technologies such as 3D printing allow for faster prototyping and new opportunities are presented by digital or hybrid machines that combine traditional printing methods with digital methods. It is quite likely that new technologies will make it possible to manufacture intelligent products in ways that we haven’t seen previously.

To really gain an insight into the expert thinking on these issues, we have organised this day in collaboration with the Automation Region cluster which is based in Västerås.
