Every year, between 350 and 400 serious train accidents occur worldwide, which can have devastating consequences for people and society. Green Buffers are a newly developed generation of mechanical dampers that absorb and distribute crash energy in collisions between trains. This unique and world-leading innovation will save many lives. Furthermore, in case of an accident, the wagons remain on the rails with minimal need for repair and deposition.

Green Buffers launched in Europe in the autumn of 2022 but "even before the product was launched, we noticed much interest in the market", says Roger Danielsson, founder & CEO.

Green Buffer's dampers can be used in modern train carriages and to upgrade existing fleets. At the same time as the new product, a design tool is also being launched customers can use that to integrate the technology into their products.

Green Buffers is part of Dalarna Science Park's incubator program, where start-ups receive support in developing sustainable and innovative business ideas. In 2021, Roger Danielsson and his team received the SKAPA Prize, Sweden's finest innovation award awarded in memory of Alfred Nobel. Also, in 2023 Green Buffers won the international Swedish Steel Prize.

Roger and the team behind Green Buffers have many years of expertise and experience in railway safety solutions. They have created a unique business concept with hardware and design tools that enable customers to design and manufacture new ones and upgrade existing railway cars. This makes Green Buffers a pioneering challenger in a market with prominent international players, says Jörgen Steen, business developer at Dalarna Science Park.

"In addition to the fact that the product itself is durable and can be recycled after an accident, it helps to accelerate the transition from road to rail traffic by increasing safety and reliability. A unique and essential product that will be extremely interesting to follow out into the world", says Jörgen Steen.

By working with Dalarna Science Park, a Green Tech cluster and the innovation arena of the Dalarna Region in Sweden, Green Buffers can tap into a wealth of resources, connections, and expertise that would otherwise be unavailable. One of the key benefits of working with a green tech promoter like Dalarna Science Park is access to a network of experts and businesses who share a common goal of advancing sustainable technology. The innovation arena provides opportunities for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and exchanging ideas, leading to more effective and efficient innovation.

Via the project Green Tech 2.0, which Dalarna Science Park run together with partners in Poland, Finland, Estonia and Lithuania, Green Buffers took part in the Cluster Xchange programme. They joined a match-making and study mission to Poznan Science Park.

Roger Danielsson on participating in the exchange “I had the opportunity to learn about the Polish business market (especially the railway vehicles market in Poland), gain new business contacts, and develop skills in railway-connected areas, and education programs. Moreover, during the visit, I had the opportunity to meet with experts from Łukasiewicz – Poznań Institute of Technology and discuss future collaboration and certification agreements”.

In conclusion, working with a green tech cluster such as Dalarna Science Park provides Roger and his team with significant benefits that can help them achieve their goals and drive positive change in the world. By leveraging the resources, networks, and support available, Green Buffers is well-positioned to continue making a meaningful impact worldwide.
