The Smart Battery Case 2 project is the second phase of the Smart Battery Case project, a research and development commitment to the technical feasibility of the use of functionalized materials applied to sensorized and technologically advanced battery cases for unmanned aircraft systems. electric unmanned aerial vehicles (UAS), in all types of use cases that seek more payload, autonomy and efficiency, through the use of lightweight composite materials resistant to the aerial environment. From 2023, the companies Compoxi, Cooling Photonics, Rotimpres and CATUAV, with the coordination and support of accredited entities such as AEI - Agrupacions Empresarials Innovadores - Clúster de Materials Avançats de Catalunya and Packaging Cluster, work together to promote electromobility in through the Smart Battery Case 2 project.

The research focuses with the joint effort of the consortium, on:

  • The development of a battery enclosure with composite materials, light and resistant to impacts.
  • The development of a system of electronic devices and sensors integrated in the battery box with additive technology to ensure real-time management and control of the system from other devices.
  • The thermal study of the battery box for the correct management of the heat in order to increase the performance of the battery, reduce consumption, extend the useful life, charge cycles and reduce possible breakdowns.
  • Conducting flight tests with the drone to verify all research.

The expected result of Smart Battery Case 2 is the creation of replicable knowledge in the mobility sector and in other industries, on the incorporation of technologies such as additive manufacturing or embedded sensors and systems for greater and better efficient management of the batteries

The final goal of the project is to drive the digital and energy transition towards electromobility through research into advanced materials with industrial applicability, their manufacturing processes and associated technologies. The initiative promotes the involvement, collaboration and cooperation of small and medium-sized companies in order to increase their competitiveness and the growth of the business fabric of the territory.

The project has received a grant of €225,785 from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism on a budget of €285,717, a funding that will help achieve a model based on electromobility - or how to use new technologies for greater efficiency energy - through cooperation between connected companies and sectors.

The Smart Battery Case project has been financed by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism through the support program for Innovative Business Groups (AEI), within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with the aim of improving the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises.
