Smart vision for well-trimmed sprouts Resource efficiency and quality control are key priorities for food processors. Using sensor-integrated visual inspection and sorting, SmartSprout intends to optimise both – reducing waste and manual labour and generating reliable data to secure consistent food quality and traceability. This validation project will apply smart vision technology to the trimming of brussels sprouts. Using a solution based on a ‘sproutcam’, sorting carrousel and trimming machine, the objective is to minimise food waste, ensure uniform quality and increase processing capacity with less labour requirements...

Smart metal detection for high milk safety The BioMim project aims to design and manufacture an interferometric biosensor for the detection of copper and lead in milk. If successful, this project would be the first step towards a disruptive approach to real-time monitoring of food safety. Although the current methods available are effective, they are expensive and complex and require samples to be sent for laboratory analysis. The whole dairy value chain from farmers to consumers will benefit from the results. Farmers will gain information about contaminants in milk and the presence of micronutrients. Dairy companies will...

Atomizer dryer Duration: 18 September 2019 / 18 March 2020 Summary: DBH has developed a new Carbon Dioxide Assisted Spray Nebulization Drying Technology (CASND), that is capable to dry and nano/micronize thermolabile or biological active materials maintaining their native state or characteristics. The currently used spray drying technique operates at much higher temperatures (160⁰C at least) in comparison to CASND which operates at 45 – 60⁰C. Moreover, its features are better than lyophilization because it is a continuous operating technology. As the particular market segments (especially the cosmetic and pharma) demand...

C ontainerized filtration unit to concentrate milk Duration: N/A Summary: More than ever the challenge for the dairy sector includes bringing milk to the consumer at a competitive price and in the most sustainable way. Farmers face a situation where cost reduction is necessary but actions are demanded as well in order to meet climate goals. Question is whether improvements in the current way milk is produced and processed are going to make the difference. Given the fact that emissions from transport, processing and distribution (carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide) to retail contribute up to 29.4%, a group of highly...

Farm-Tech device installed in the pigsty Duration: 25 February 2020 / 25 February 2021 Summary: Farm-Tech project consists in the demonstration into an operational environment of a Decision Support System (DSS) for Swine farmers. The DSS allow monitoring and controlling different biological parameters. In this way, it would be possible to: Helping swine farmers to solve management problems (feeding, medical treatments) by taking data-driven decisions; Fighting chemicals resistance by rationalizing the usage of these treatments in swine farms. Nowadays, the only solutions for the management and treatment of farm animals...
