The next generation plant-based meat analogues The high consumption of meat has detrimental consequences for the life on Planet Earth. Meat production puts a burden on the environment since it is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, high land and water use and inefficiency in resource use. Additionally, the system of meat production is forced to increase its efficiency, providing challenges in animal wellbeing, nutrition and food safety. Reducing meat consumption provides an attractive alternative. A route to reduce meat consumption is the development of plant-based meat analogues. Plant-based meat analogues offer a more sustainable alternative.
Efficient drying system as an innovation enabler of high value biorefineries: Reduction of food waste and energy used to upcycle biomass. Last year, over 9 billion kilograms of coffee were consumed worldwide, of which 30% in the European Union (EU). Caffeine is less than 2% of coffee’s composition. Coffee is the largest source of antioxidants for the Western population, composed of the proteins, sugars, polyphenols, triglycerides, amongst others. All of the above are of high value for human health and skin. However, less than 1% of these compounds end up in a cup of coffee. The 99% left remains intact inside the spent coffee grounds, which most commonly are disposed of as waste; decomposing in landfills or incinerated, which generate methane (340m 3 /ton). This is a challenge as there is still a lot of value yet to be extracted from this resource, therefore, a lot of environmental harm to be avoided.
