On 26 November last, a workshop was held at Idom headquarters in Bilbao to showcase the skills of the Basque energy and environmental sectors before a delegation of government officials, associations and research agencies from South Africa. The Basque Environmental Cluster (ACLIMA) and the Basque Energy Cluster presented their respective sectors, including outstanding figures, initiatives and projects from recent years.

In the context of a counterpart trade mission organised by the South African delegation working together with the EU in the field of circular economy, representatives from the African country visited the Basque Country as part of their tour of Europe. The delegation had expressed an interest in Basque industry, a recognised pioneer in the energy sector and highly committed to the environment.

In addition to visiting key businesses and technology centres in the Basque Country, the mission also featured a workshop revolving around the Basque industry, focussing on businesses in the environmental and energy sectors. With regards to the energy sector, the Basque Energy Cluster showcased the figures for the sector, key value chains for the African country (electric grids, solar power and wind power) and other projects of interest to the delegation. Finally, electricity equipment manufacturer ZIV and engineering firm Sener presented their activities, projects and success stories. The latter highlighted their South African projects and their vision for the solar sector (CSP and PV, hybrids with biomass and other technologies, waste treatment, etc.).
