K1-MET GmbH

Austria: Upper Austria

Overview

Mission/Objectives of the cluster organisation

COMPETENCE IN SUSTAINABLE METAL PRODUCTION

The vision for the period 2015-2023 is to develop K1-MET as the leading and internationally renowned metallurgical competence centre. To reach this vision, recognition and implementation of trendsetting innovations will be one of the major challenges. The basis for a fruitful development of K1-MET is the established and deepening cooperation between our approximately 20 scientific facilities and industrial companies since 2001. The results in industrial and academic research underline our success. The next step in the lifecycle of K1-MET is the founding of a company with limited liability under Austrian law (GmbH, equivalent to Ltd.) as an answer to the demanding challenges in the metallurgical sector in terms of technology and organization. In particular, the European Commission targets to reduce CO2 emissions for the period 2020-2050 play a key role in our research and development.

Specifically the following actions are planned:

Definition of a joint… The K1-MET metallurgical competence center hosts a research programme with four main themes, named areas. The focus of Area 1 is resources and recycling and Area 2 contains projects on metallurgical research. Area 3 is on processing and energy efficiency, in accordance with one of the main objectives of K1-MET: energy efficiency and reduction of specific CO2 emission. Finally, in Area 4 knowledge from the other areas are combined and consolidated into simulation tools.

. OBJECTIVES AND MOTIVATION

K1-MET is a competence center for Excellent Technologies in Advanced Metallurgical and Environmental Process Development and is driven by the Austrian steel industry. The K1-MET metallurgical competence center is aligned with the strategic goals defined by the European Commission in the EU 2020 strategy.

K1-MET is essential to the continuation of the prolonged successful track record of the Austrian steel and processing industry, to make it more competitive, sustainable, and lead to economic growth. At the core of this vision three main goals are identified:

CO2 efficient production of metals and intermediate components
Cross-sectional approach to radically improved production process
Leadership in solutions for more efficient processing and energy systems
